The University Activities Board at Wright State University kicks off their annual spirit week, iHeart WSU Week, Monday, Feb. 6 with the first annual Spirit Swap.
In previous years many students around campus have not taken the spirit week seriously. “It’s clear that overall spirit on campus is at a low due to all the circumstances happening on campus lately,” explained Aly Spence, Director of Campus Spirits for UAB. However, this year Spence wanted to change that outlook by rebranding the week entirely, explain how she felt that “they should come just to gain love for the university as a whole.” After Lukas Wenrick, student body president, came to Spence with the idea of a Spirit Swap where students trade in old Wright State shirts for a new shirt, the rest of planning for iHeart WSU Week came together. “I always see students wearing other university’s gear around campus and hardly see anyone wearing Wright State merchandise,” said Wenrick, “after seeing University of Tennessee’s take on a Spirit Swap I knew that I wanted to bring this to our campus in hopes of improving our campus’ spirit.” The weeklong event runs from Feb. 6-10 in efforts to give students fun activities to attend, while also building moral for the Wright State community. As the event starts on Monday in the Student Union, students can be on the lookout for other activities happening around campus throughout the week. "UA-Be My Valentine" takes place on Tuesday in the Apollo Rooms in the Student Union. Students will be able to stuff their own bear while also writing letters to children at Dayton Children’s Hospital. Students can also look forward to the comedic performance by Jonathan Burns Wednesday afternoon. Last year Burns was expected to come to campus, but ended up canceling the night before. UAB is crossing their fingers that he doesn’t continue that tradition during this week’s spirit week. UAB is also bringing back Cupcakes and Canvases. Last year UAB introduced the event, as a quieter event, but surprisingly the event was a big success. It was inevitable that they had to bring it back. The week concludes with Capture the Raider. Students can join in on the fun in the campus wide scavenger hunt. Various flags will be hidden around campus for students to find and to return for a special prize. “I really think this week will be an amazing opportunity for students to come together as one university to show some school spirit and to spread an overall love for Wright State,” explains Jordan Collins, Director of April Craze. |
