Wright State University scored big on Saturday, February 9th and 11th with wins over two Horizon League rivals, Green Bay and Milwaukee.
On Saturday, Wright State pulled off an 88-79 win against Green Bay. Four Wright State players scored in the double digits to solidify the victory. Mark Alstork was lead scorer with 20 points, Steven Davis added 17 points, Grant Benzinger 16 points, and closing in with 14 points was Justin Mitchell.
“My main focus was getting the win,” stated Mitchell.
Mitchell had the highlight of the evening with a triple-double, scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a career high of 10 assists. This was only the third triple-double in the history of the Wright State’s Men’s basketball program.
“This was my first one in college basketball. Credit to God and my life, for giving me the opportunity to do this,” added Mitchell.
Junior guard, Alstork led the team with 20 points, adding to Wright State’s win. This is the twelfth time this season he has scored 20 points or more in a game. He has been selected as Horizon League Player of the Week twice this season.
“I’m just happy for him. We’re real close on and off the court,” stated Alstork when asked about his teammate’s triple-double.
“We fought. This was a big win for us,” said Alstork. “Our team is growing and getting more chemistry.” “As long as we keep growing like that, we’re going to be a good team.”
This has been a year of rebuilding for the men’s basketball team. With a new coaching staff and five seniors leaving from last year’s team, a new group of players has had to step up for the wins.
The Raiders ended last season losing to Green Bay in the Horizon League Championship game. Then, Wright State suffered a 61-78 loss this season to Green Bay on January 12. With this recent win, Wright State is now only half a game behind Green Bay in the Horizon League standings.
“We’re back in the race,” stressed Mitchell.
Adding to Wright State’s success was a 76-65 win against Milwaukee on Thursday, February 9. The Raiders faced Milwaukee earlier this season with a close 70-67 win.
Highlights of this last match-up were Benzinger’s 21 points and career high 19 rebounds. Alstork led the team with 22 points, and Davis added 14 points.
Wright State will be on the road for the next three match-ups and return home for games on February 24 and 26, to finish regular season play at the Nutter Center.
