Fairborn, OH- Wright State Campus Recreation offers a free fitness center to students and faculty with the hopes of encouraging healthier lifestyles. For many Wright State students, the balance of working out and becoming healthier can be challenging. With homework, class, anxiety, commuting and working multiple jobs exercise may be the last thing on their minds.
Student manager at the fitness center, Delaney Clymer, gave some of her tips and tricks on how to stay healthy and motivated. “I think it’s very important to stay in shape, especially students going through college... It’s challenging to stay on top of it but there are three things that I do myself; set goals you want to accomplish, find yourself a workout partner and reward yourself. Having little rewards can make you stay after your goal and keep you motivated.”
For many people the idea of going to a gym with complex equipment and seasoned members can be reason enough to stay home. One way that newcomers can curb this anxiety is by choosing times when the gym is less crowded. According to the fitness center employees the busiest times to go to the gym are in the mornings and nights, so going in between classes or during lunchtime is ideal.
If you can only make it to the gym during the busy hours don’t worry. The fitness center employees pride themselves on creating a welcoming environment and will help any beginner with questions about equipment or workout routines. Clymer noted, “We also have select trainers you can get to get a helpful start! We love making people feel good about themselves, which is why I love this job.”
Rebecca Meinert, a sophomore at Wright State, takes advantage of the fitness center every day. “I do like this gym… I come here every day to work out. For the amount of students that go here I think it is a little small. They could update some of their benches but I’m pretty content.”
Meinert went on to mention the advantages of using the university gym. “I go to class and then come here. It’s convenient for students because it’s free to use. A lot of the time people will finish class and then leave thinking they’ll go to their own gym when in reality they just choose to stay home. The gym here makes it easy to get in and get done quick.”
