Pre-pooing may sound gross, but it’s one of the essential ways to retain moisture in textured hair.
According to Naturallycurly.com, pre-pooing “...is usually an oil treatment applied to hair prior to shampooing or conditioning.”
With a Pre-Poo, it allows your hair to keep the moisture that shampoos normally gets rid of. When washing your hair, getting it clean may be the goal, but you would like to keep some of those natural oils your scalp produces.
When pre-pooing the hair, you can’t just put the oil on, then wash it off immediately.
Pramae Glinton, a managing cosmetologist graduate from carousel beauty college, says that when pre-pooing, “keeping a shower cap on your head for 30 to 45 minutes before your wash routine, can help your hair strand absorb the moisture.”
Even though moisture is important, pre-pooing has benefits for other aspects of healthy hair. One of those benefits is less breakage.
According to rehairducation.com, a good pre-poo before washing can also help with detangling hair.
Naturally curly hair tends to tangle a lot. When the hair strands knot together, it can cause damage when detangling.
With a pre-poo, rehairducation.com says, it makes it easier to detangle the hair because it keeps each strand moisturized; meaning they can slip out easier.
Glinton says “...[people] also use a light conditioner to pre-poo the hair. Some even make their own mixtures.” For low porosity hair, conditioners before washing is best to open the pores in the hair strand, and allow more moisture though during washing.
When it comes to a preferred pre-poo method, Glinton suggests testing different products to know what your hair best responds to.
