The last five months of hard work have come to an end. No more early morning workouts, studying on the bus, or reviewing game tapes.
It was a devastating loss for the Raiders in the Quarterfinals of the Little Caesars Horizon League tournament. Wright State men’s basketball team, coming in at #5 seed, travelled to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan to face #4 seen Northern Kentucky University on Sunday, March 5.
Wright State came out strong with a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game, only to face stiff competition for the remainder of the game with NKU making 14 straight shots in the second half. Wright State struggled and tried to come back, suffering an 82-77 defeat.
It was a big game for Grant Benzinger who had a career high 7 three pointers, closing out the game with 29 points and 8 rebounds.
“That doesn’t matter to me, it’s Mike La Tulip and Steven Davis last game ever it’s a bad feeling, “stated Benzinger. “It’s Mike and Steven’s last game ever. We wanted to win the game for them. They gave us all that they could and we wanted to win the championship for the both of them.”
Wright State University had high hopes for this season with the hiring Scott Nagy, formerly of South Dakota State. He was hired to move the team in a new direction after last season’s devastating loss to Green Bay in the final game of the tournament, finishing the 2015-2016 season with a 22-13 overall record, and 13-5 in league play.
“We struggled with these guys all year; match ups are touch with them. We did a nice job the second half. It was a miracle that we were only down two at halftime. We did shoot 66% the second half; we rebounded well too. We did everything we could,” stated Coach Nagy.
In coach Nagy’s first season at Wright State, the Raiders finished the overall record 20-12, and 11-7 in league play.
NKU went on to beat Milwaukee 59-53 to win its first Horizon League tournament, finishing the season with a 24-10 record, and earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
