Instead of staying in the dorms as one might spend any other Friday night, a few Wright State students went to Downtown Dayton for First Friday and had an adventure that can only be described as lit. We started the month off right with food, fun, and dancing -- and we can’t wait until next month rolls around so we can do it all again.
If you've never heard of First Friday, it is Downtown Dayton’s way of showcasing the city’s businesses, restaurants, and organizations for one night, all night. Free from 5pm to 10pm, people are welcome to share art, music and culture with one another as they celebrate their love for their city. From my experience from February’s First Friday, I have created a list of things you can do to prepare for when you head out to First Friday’s next month.
1. Organize and Coordinate
Not really knowing what to expect, my best friend and I called up a group of girls to check out the scene together. Keeping in mind that it’s currently freezing outside, we bundled up, gathered our IDs and started a group chat so we all could stay updated. When it comes to any group hang out, linking friends of friends who are meeting for the first time is essential. Not only so nobody gets lost, but also so no one feels excluded.
2. Timing Is Everything
You can find information on what restaurants and businesses are going to be open and what fun, free activities are in store by checking out the Downtown Dayton Social Media accounts like Facebook or Twitter, or clicking on Dayton.com. Take time to figure out which ones everyone would like to visit. Considering parking, location, time and costs (if any) before getting downtown will save time and money, for more fun and less confusion.
3. Charge Up
If you have a portable charger, car charger, wall charger, or case charger, make sure you have your cables and plugs. You’re not going to want to miss out on good pics and Snapchat filters. Knowing your smartphone and how much juice it can hold is going to be key in planning for this fun Friday night. Depending of you’re going solo or with a group like I did, you can even nominate two people to be the Charger Czars and be the hero of the night if someone needs a charge.
4. Gather Essentials
Whether your bare minimum is an ID and a cell phone, or you have a huge tote boasting a wide assortment of gear, figure out what you need and where it fits on you so you can be sure to never leave it behind. Things to consider are cash, gum or mints, light jackets, or hair ties. Whatever you find yourself reaching for in times of need, keep it on hand.
5. Have Fun!
Now that you have planned your amazing night, go make the most of it! Bring the new month in with food you’ve never tried. Support a small business and find your new favorite piece for the month. Visit a studio and make new friends over art created by a fellow Daytonian. This of one of the awesome parts of our city. Embrace it and enjoy it with an open mind and never be afraid to try new things.Whatever it is that you find to be fun, you can find it at First Friday.
